Non-Formal Education Focused on the Development of Critical Thinking and Media Literacy: The Role and Activities of Key Stakeholders in Slovakia

Abstrakt

Aim. This research study aims to examine the role and activities of key stakeholders in Slovakia who participate in non-formal education activities focused on the issue of critical thinking in relation to media communication. The aim was to gain an overview of the ways and means by which these actors address their target groups and what conceptual approaches they use to increase the level of media literacy at the national level.

Methods. Framework analysis of secondary data on Slovak subjects whose non-formal educational activities and tools focus on the issue of critical thinking, disinformation and fake news by increasing the level of media and information literacy of various target groups.

Results. The analysis of secondary data showed that representatives of various stakeholders in Slovakia offer different categories of projects and activities to increase the level of media and information literacy of various target groups. The obtained results indicate that the most active providers of non-formal education activities are in the sector of non-governmental organisations and think tanks. Our analysis also aimed to examine what types of educational activities organisations provide. The most significant representation is static online content (various types of educational content available through the website).

Conclusions. The presented research results suggest that in terms of the position of key actors, the ways of their involvement in non-formal education processes are sufficiently diversified. They use a wide range of implementation concepts and models to develop critical thinking through non-formal learning methods for different target groups.

    He currently works as Associate Professor specialising in media literacy, media communication and journalism. Currently, he is the director of the Centre of Media Literacy (IMEC) which is affiliated with the
    Faculty of Mass Media Communication at the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia. He
    also works as Head of the Department of Media Education. His research activities are focused mainly on the relationship between youth and media, the social impacts of digital technologies and methodological aspects of research on media and media education. He is a member of the International Association for Media Education (IAME), Central European Digital Media Observatory, European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA), UNESCO-UNAOC UNITWIN Network for Media and Information Literacy, European Association for Viewers Interests (EAVI), The Slovak EU Kids Online Team, Media Literacy Expert Group,  and European Academy of Management, Marketing and Media (EAMMM).

    Viera Kačinová is a lecturer at the Faculty of Mass Media Communication at the University of SS. Cyril
    and Methodius in Trnava. She is a member of the professional team associated with IMEC – the Centre for Media Literacy at the FMK UCM. Her scientific and research activities are focused on the areas of media pedagogy, media education, axiological aspects of media, the development of media competences, media education didactics and teachers’ education in this field. She has been the author, lead researcher and coordinator of various projects related to media education at the State Educational Institute, taking part in their implementation into the Slovak school environment. She was a member of the Working Expert Group of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, which was aimed at preparing the Concept of Media Education in the Context of Lifelong Learning. She is the author of the scientific monograph Theory and Practice of Media Education. Media Education as a Part of General School Education (published in Slovak as Teória a prax mediálnej výchovy: Mediálna výchova ako súčasť všeobecného školského vzdelávania, 2015).

    Associate Professor at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of the National University, Lviv Polytechnic. Her research interests include non-quality advertising in Ukrainian print media, topics related to gender in media discourse, Public Relations, television studies, online media, etc. She has published a monograph titled Pathogenic Advertising in the Ukrainian Print Media and has written various scientific articles on different problems, including social networks and TV content.

  • Martin Majda - Department of Social Sciences Faculty of Theology, The Catholic University in Ružomberok Hrabovská cesta 1A, 034 01 Ružomberok, Slovak Republic

    Assoc. prof. Martin Majda works at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University in Ružomberok. Between 2015 and 2018, he completed his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University in Košice. In 2015, he was appointed prefect of the priestly seminary of Bishop Ján Vojtaššák in Spišská Kapitula. In his academic work, he deals with issues of missiology, media studies, ecumenism and the social doctrine of the church.
